The village of Bothey
In medieval medieval periodBothey straddled the border between the County of Namur and the Duchy of Brabant. The village is crossed by the Chaussée de Nivelles, along which people used to stop at theAuberge du Chat Botté (an 18th-century coaching inn). Today, Bothey is the smallest smallest section of the town of Gembloux, close to Mazy and Corroy-le-Château. The village's rural character has been preserved. A quick stroll through the village reveals its heritage, with its many stone and brick enclosures.
Château de Bothey, also known as Château d'Acosse, was built in the neo-classical style in 1828. It has been extensively remodeled, including the construction of two side wings. The large farmhouse next door dates from the 18th century. The small Bothey church is dedicated to Saint Peter. It was rebuilt in 1756, thanks to the perseverance of Maître Corneille Lambert. Mass is still celebrated here every week. The neighboring presbytery was built by the commune in 1845.
One of the village's most important buildings, chaussée de Nivelles, was built in 1846 by Jaumart and Deprez. They sold it to the Commune in 1865 to house the school and the teacher's house. It now belongs to the SCRL "La Cité des Couteliers", which has converted several apartments.
Between Bothey and Corroy-le-Château stands the chapel Sainte-Anne or Chapelle au Chêne. Its lintel bears the date 1688. It was renovated in 2011. Near the Chaussée de Nivelles is the Notre-Dame et Sainte-Catherine chapel (1772), with its handsome scrolled pediment. On the other side of the chaussée, you can walk down to the chapelle Saint-Pierre and its spring.
