Le Moulin Defrenne
This is the last remaining circular windmill in the province of Namur. It was completely restored in 1990. It was listed as a Walloon Heritage Site in 1962.
Built in 1840 by Charles Sevrin and his wife Julienne Heurion, the Grand-Leez windmill is an integral part of the local heritage.
Charles Sevrin, born in Grand-Leez on 24 Brumaire, Year XII, and his wife Julienne Heurion, born on 8 Ventôse, Year X, inherited a plot of land belonging to the family farm located at the bottom of the hill—known as the "grand T'Chaurly" or La Marache farm. It was on this land that they decided to build their mill.
On July 27, 1870, the mill and its land, covering an area of 12 acres and 48 centiares, changed hands. By deed drawn up by notary Burlet (1 Rue du Bordia, Gembloux), they were purchased for 8,440 francs by Charles Defrenne and his wife Anne-Joseph Hemptinne. It is from this couple that the mill derives its most well-known name today: the Defrenne Mill.
