The village of Grand-Leez
The village of Grand-Leez, between history and nature!
Grand-Leez is more than just a charming village: it's also a village with a rich past. Its name, of Celtic origin, recalls a place "where water dominates", and it has to be said that the region was marshy for a long time.
As early as the 9th century, the village of Grand-Leez is mentioned in ancient deeds linked to the great abbeys of Lobbes, Saint-Denis and Floreffe, which owned land and a church here. The following centuries saw a succession of lords, with their quarrels, reconstructions and embellishments - notably the church and its presbytery, decorated in the 18th century.
The village's heritage is well worth a visit:
The Petit-Leez castle-farm, built on marshy ground in the 17th century, now converted into an art gallery and reception venue. The windmill, a rare example preserved in Wallonia, built in 1830 and restored with its wings.
La Convertière farm, another vestige of the Floreffe abbey. With its narrow streets, woods, lake and heritage, Grand-Leez reveals a setting where nature and history mingle. And a little trivia: in the 19th century, several inhabitants emigrated as far away as Wisconsin, taking their Walloon language and traditions with them!
Whether for a stroll, a cultural discovery or a rejuvenating break, Grand-Leez is a real trip out of time.
