Gembloux Abbey
The abbey was founded in the 10th century by Saint-Guibert, and enjoyed a golden age in the 11th century with the much-traveled monk Sigebert (his statue stands in the middle of Place Saint-Guibert). Like the town, the monastic buildings were ravaged by fire in 1678, then rebuilt by the architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez in the late 18th century.
After the monks had been expelled and the Abbey had been occupied by a succession of tenants, the government decided to found an Agronomic Institute in Gembloux to combat the recurring famines of the 19th century. Since then, all the Abbey's former premises have been occupied by the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Faculty.
